COOSSA Teams With Stater Brothers For Marine Families Holiday Cheer!
COOSSA, the Condominium Organization Of South Sierra Avenue in
Solana Beach, decided to forgo their traditional Holiday party this year and
instead spread some joy with some neighbors who might need a little cheer over
this season. They decided to offer $1,000 to dependents of Marines from
Camp Pendleton serving in Iraq.
COOSSA member Seymour Phillips told fellow condo owner Jack Brown about the
idea. Mr. Brown, Chairman and Chief Executive officer of Stater Brothers
and a Navy Veteran, immediately offered gift certificates for 50 of his
company's pre-cooked, complete Holiday dinners for families of 8-10 in exchange
for the $1,000, instead of the $2,000 they would normally cost.
To ensure the gift certificates were distributed in time for the Holidays to
those Marine families who can best use them, Mr. Seymour (Barbara) Phillips
worked with Mr. & Mrs. Randy Stokes of the Solana Beach Presbyterian Church,
through the Camp Pendleton Chaplin and three on-site social service
organizations familiar with Camp Pendleton families.
The certificates may be redeemed by the recipients at their convenience at any
Stater Brothers Supermarket, including the two in Oceanside at 2170 Vista Way
and at 3770 Mission Avenue.
Follow-up:
As a result of the distribution, we received several
heart-warming thank you notes for recipients which were shared with COOSSA
members at the Jan. 18th meeting.
In a totally separate and independent effort, Bill Gifford, Seascape Sur,
mounted a collection drive amongst COOSSA member condos. He asked that
individual residents contribute through their condo managers. This effort
resulted in the collection of $900, plus COOSSA contributed $1,000, which was distributed by the YMCA as
Christmas goods to families of Camp Pendleton.
Both Seymour Phillips and Bill Gifford deserve a special "Well Done" for their efforts, and all of COOSSA can feel good about this year's holiday story!
